On April 3rd I wrote a speculative piece, "AA: AFTER ARAFAT", anticipating that Arafat was on his way out. I thought that it was highly likely that Arafat would get his wish and become a ‘Shaheed" (a martyr). It seemed to me that his fellow terrorists would see that his greatest value would be in his death.
It has been reported that Arafat is suffering from advanced prostate cancer and cerebral edema, in addition to Parkinson’s palsy. Clearly, he cannot be allowed to die an ordinary death from such common maladies. His loyal commanders cannot allow him to go down into history, having died not as a martyr but merely as a sick old man.
They would gather, conspire, kill him and blame the Jews. His last bit of value would be as a martyr whose death would further invigorate the cause of radical Islam. The Israelis would, of course, deny any participation in the assassination but the Arab street would not and could not accept this denial.
Arafat will be shot or carefully exploded so that nothing could point to his inner circle. They will deny any such conspiracy and tell the mobs that the Israelis had assassinated the greatest Arab leader since Saladin. His body will be whisked away, denying forensic experts a look at the body with a determination of how he really died. He will be paraded through the streets and towns in long processions, then to ‘lie in state’ - at least on TV. He will become larger in death than he was in life.
As his burial procession moves forward, women will faint. Men will scream in hysteria, shooting into the air with the guns they were given by Israel’s Oslo gang. They will, no doubt, try to bury him in the graveyard just east of the Old City of Jerusalem - possibly near where the Islamic warriors are buried in front of the Golden Gate that was bricked up to keep out the inevitable entrance of the Jewish Moshiach (Messiah). It is thought by the Muslims of the time that buried Muslims would make the ground unholy for the Jewish Moshiach.
Arafat will become greater in death than he ever was in life. He will be used by the various Terrorist groups to incite the streets and reinvigorate the ‘Intifada’. The children will pour into the streets in a high state of excitement, pledging to commit homicide as their mothers beamed approval. The Saudis will use the dead Arafat as a teaching example in their Madrassas (Islamic schools). Just think...little Muslim children can go to sleep under a smiling poster of Arafat smiling down encouraging homicide.
His final burial will be like a great state affair. The European leaders will be there in solemn attendance. Egypt, Syria, Iran will send their best and most decorated. Secretary of State Colin Powell, Head of the U.N. Kofi Annan, Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu,....will all make solemn speeches of Peace and pledge that another State of Palestine will soon be born. It will rival the spectacle of the grand triumphal march of Aida at the opera.
But first, they have to kill the bastard before they can get on with the eulogizing and wailing. Well, that’s what I think will happen.
ACT II
After Arafat is safely disposed of and out of the way, there will arise several opposing forces: Hamas, Hezb’Allah, Al Aksa (military wing of Arafat’s Fatah), PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine), Islamic Jihad, etc. All of them will push to take over power. This will include a struggle for both the power and the fortune that Arafat had accumulated, now estimated in excess of $25 Billion dollars.
It has been reported in DEBKAFILE (Debka.com) that Arafat has cut off any who could sign on the myriad of financial accounts, leaving his assets - not to the Palestinian Arab people but in the hands of his wife Suha who lives in Paris. He knows he’s on the way out and is insuring that the Billions do not fall into the hands of his Terrorist compatriots nor to the Palestinian people.
The other force will be a gaggle of European nations, the U.S. State Department and the Arab League all proclaiming that now is the right time for another state of Palestine. They will try to put in their own replacement as candidates for election. However, the candidates will be hand-picked by the various Terrorist factions.
Arafat’s PLO will not disappear but merely change hats and personas. Hamas and Islamic Jihad will select their candidates in conference with Iran, Syria and Iraq. The idea of a "free, fair, and honest" election does not occur in Arab land. Powell, the Europeans, ‘et al’ will assist in the pretense that Palestinian elected officials can speak their own mind without fear of instant retribution, including being murdered as so-called collaborators.
Think for a moment. Where in the Muslim/Arab world are there free elections? Egypt, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Lebanon? Will there ever be free elections among the Palestinians? Of course not! There might, however, be a pretense of free elections, followed by a demand by Israel’s dedicated enemies to create a Palestinian state now that they have erected a facade of democracy.
But, first, Arafat must leave the scene in a way that will create a new holy martyr in the historiography of the so-called Arab Palestinians. No doubt, he will be more useful to the cause of radical Islam in death than he was in life.
Think of the hysterical Arab women ululating and wailing for CNN. Surely, the NEW YORK TIMES, WASHINGTON POST, CHICAGO TRIBUNE will feature front page photos of children in procession for their dearly, departed leader, carrying small training weapons and make-believe homicide bomb belts.
ACT III
Should Arafat be put aside for health or other reasons, there is little doubt that the world would leap upon Israel, claiming that the "rolling horizon of peace" is upon us.
Elections in the Third World have never been "free, fair or democratic". That is my personal opinion which I maintain is true. (Anyone care to argue the generality?) The Europeans are blowing smoke about Yassir Arafat being the elected leader of the Palestinian Arabs. First, he was never elected but rather anointed himself as dictator. Anyone who cites the election where he appointed a ‘straw man’ (in this case, a woman) as his ostensible opponent is a fool or a liar.
Elections in any Arab country are a sham. Whoever is in power stays in power unless he is assassinated or pushed out in a military ‘coup de stat’. No one is voted out of office by the common people. They are as irrelevant as the clouds of house-flies or the dirt of the street.
The coming elections scheduled for January 2003, as visualized by President Bush, were supposed to be municipal elections first in order to develop and bring to the fore any talented, local leaders. But, there is no way Arafat and his thugocracy will allow any locals to gain power and influence before ‘el Presidente’ Arafat (or his clone) can again be placed in the power and money seat. Arafat and his cronies have turned the ‘vision’ of President Bush on its head. Now the January elections are slated to be for President and the later March elections for local leaders.
Arafat’s power base is the PLO, the Tanzim and Aksa Brigades (the military factions of Arafat’s Fatah branch of the PLO - Palestinian Liberation Organization). He and they cannot risk replacement by another faction. Besides, if other Terrorist factions happen to win, they and whoever was elected, could be quickly eliminated - democracy be damned! Since the Europeans have been pouring money into Arafat’s personal accounts, be assured that his campaign will be well-funded. Every honest possible leader would probably then be bankrupt or intimidated into silence.
But, the E.U., the U.N., the U.S. State Department have already accepted the results of an election that has not yet occurred - for them. It really doesn’t matter if Hitler or Saddam Hussein were the candidates as long as the fiction of a democratic election takes place.
That none of the Terrorist thugs will give up their positions in the hierarchy of the hydra-headed Terrorist organization network means absolutely nothing to the above named organizations of nations. Whoever is elected, no matter how fraudulently, the E.U., the U.N. and the Arabist U.S. State Department will use that as an excuse to force Israel into extremely vulnerable and dangerous comprises to her security and sovereignty.

Russian version
An introduction to MAOF
Haim Goldman

Dear Friends,

Would you believe that the undersigned has anything in common with

-- Professor Victor Davis Hanson (Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University),
-- Dr Charles Krauthammer, (Washington Post, Time, The Weekly Standard),
-- Caroline Glick (Deputy Managing Editor of the Jerusalem Post),
-- Jonathan Tobin (Executive Editor of the Philadelphia Jewish Exponent).

Amazingly, the editors of the MAOF website decided that the missives of the undersigned are worthy of translation and posting along the articles written by these distinguished authors.

The first letter was published without the consent of the undersigned.
However, after thorough examination of the laudable attitude of MAOF and of the excellent contents of the website, the undersigned had most graciously granted his permission for publication of his missives in both English and Russian.

“Analytical Group MAOF” [1] is an organisation founded about ten years ago by Russian-speaking Jewish intellectuals. The attitude of MAOF is definitely pro-Zionist -- unambiguously and unapologetically.

One of MAOF’s primary purposes is providing information and analysis about Middle-Eastern and world affairs as well as about Israel’s history, values and dilemmas. In addition to extensive publication activity in various media, MAOF also organises excursions and seminars. While the vast majority of the contents of the MAOF website is in Russian, texts originally written in English are provided in the original [2] as well as in Russian.

There are arguably about 250 millions of Russian-speakers worldwide and many of them do not read English. The indisputable motivation for the author’s permission was to grant those millions of disadvantaged people the grand benefit of reading the author’s ruminations. If the author is ever maliciously accused that his tacit motivation for authorising the publication was his craving to be listed along with the above-mentioned distinguished writers, his plea will definitely be “nolo contendere”.

The editors of MAOF expressed their gratitude by granting the undersigned a privilege that no other author got – the opportunity to review and correct the Russian translation before publication. The original letters of the undersigned are at [3] and their Russian version is at [4]. At of today, only two letters are posted but several other letters are pending translation.

You are kindly ENCOURAGED TO RECOMMEND the MAOF website to your friends and colleagues worldwide, particularly those who speak Russian. Those who do not enjoy the benefit of proficiency in the exquisite Russian language can find many thought-provoking and inspiring articles about Middle-Eastern and world affairs in the English section [2].

Sincerely,

Haim Goldman
